JOSE GONZALEZ, TONIGHT IN ROCHESTER, NY

Tonight is the Jose Gonzalez show at the German House. It will be surrounded by a serious amount of studying and reading and writing things. It's sort of frustrating that Nina Nastasia joins him tomorrow rather than today but you can't always get what you want or somewhat unreasonably half-expect. Jose, with all his nylon-stringed Swedish talent, was brought here by our friend Brendan at Universal Buzz, not bad for a first booking at all, hmm?

Video - Sony at least has good taste when trying to convince me I need a new printer. That's Jose's cover of....

this amazing song. this is a serious 30 iTunes-plays-in-one-day little piece. The video is also, um, perfect. Where did those kids learn to skate like that? 'Nam?

So everyone should go! doors are at 7 PM, show starts at eight, openers are Sub Pop's Death Vessel. It's $15 at the door.

MUSIC AND FILM GET A SWEET DEAL.

I know she supposedly ruined Godfather Part III but I've forgiven Sofia Coppola. Lost In Translation would have been enough (isn't there a Yiddish word for that) but then this.

Check out this trailer. She makes a movie about 18th century France and she soundtracks it with Aphex Twin and the Cure. This particular trailer takes Joy Division's "Age of Consent" and wrings it for all it's worth. I didn't realize how much that song galloped until I saw them horses. Sofia has the eye and the ear, my friends.

I love the text too. Reminiscent of Jubilee and all that very odd music/film that came out of Britain in the wake of punk rock. New wave was a movement I've always enjoyed but could never in a million years imagine myself actually making art anything like Jubilee or a Eurythmics album. Layer that on top of the French Revolution and I am at the very least intrigued.
